The Renaming of Shawnee Park

 

Our involvement with this started when we received the following E-mail on 11/02/06:

Greetings!

My name is Don Wendell, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Plano. Since you are an active participant in the neighborhood that is near Shawnee Park, I wanted to get your opinion on something.

The Parks and Recreation Planning Board is considering a request to rename Shawnee Park the "Margaret Ketron Moore Park." The renaming is to honor the Moore family who donated various park land to the City, including a significant portion of Shawnee Park.

Would you please send me an e-mail or give me a call and let me know your thoughts? I would appreciate it very much.

Since many of us have lived here since the park was created, the name "Shawnee Park" has become an integrated part of our neighborhood. We also understand the desire to honor the donors. We responded with a letter suggesting other forms of creating a memorial, such as re-naming the road that leads into the park, or the playground/pavilion area or the pond, but still keeping the overall name of Shawnee Park.

The Park Board would like our input before they reach a decision on this matter, so I urge you to join us in convincing them to leave the park name as Shawnee Park. You can help by doing one or more of the following"

Send an E-mail of support to VCNA@comcast.net . In it, please list your name and address, so the park board will know you are part of the Village Creek neighborhood. We will print these off and take them to the next park board meeting on January 9th, 2007.

Print off a copy of the petition, sign it and ask your neighbors to sign it, too. When you've collected all the signatures you can, send a note to VCNA@comcast.net with your address and/or phone and one of your Village Creek board members will arrange to pick it up. Or you can mail it to: (Village Creek Neighborhood Association, 3368 Tarkio, Plano, TX,  75074)

Print off a copy (or several) of the flyer, and pass them out around your neighborhood. All people have to do is sign it, fold it over so the address shows, put a stamp on it and mail it.  Or if they return it to you, just drop us a note and we'll come over an pick it up.

Put a sign in your yard. Put a note in your E-mail to VCNA@comcast.net and someone will contact you to bring one over.
